Bird song sebastian faulks5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() I read this for my local book club and I can imagine when we meet in February this book is going to make for great discussion. This is a powerful novel, and certainly not for the faint hearted. Set before and during the Great War, Birdsong tells the story of Stephen, starting in pre-war France and taking us right through the war and through a terrible period of history.įaulks delivers a moving and shocking account of Stephen and his love affair and the trials and hardships of trench life and it seems as though at times you are seeing this all through the characters eyes. A novel that manages to create a passionate and erotic love story combined with the horrors of war. ![]() ![]() Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks is a moving, passionate, shocking, thought provoking and heartbreaking novel. ![]() The secret garden puffin classics5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Yet it retains antiquated views of colonialism and perhaps a slightly to romanticised view about the moors. Tinged with a dash of magic, this book oozes with the timeless charm of English moorlands. She regularly found inspiration through her observations of nature and the walled gardens at Maytham Hall in Kent England. The Secret Garden is a wholesome tale about change, growth, and self-cultivation. Burnett was a British American novelist and playwright, best known for her novels Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden. She remains quite contrary until she helps her garden grow - and finds someone worse off than herself to bring along for the ride. In fact, she yells like a little princess, can't make friends, and simply despises everything. This special Puffin Classics edition of The Secret Garden has been inspired by the Victoria and Albert Museums collection of the work of Arts and Crafts. After basic training, he is assigned to the Territorial Army, tasked with keeping the peace in the welfare cities of the NAC. Terms of Enlistment tells the story of Andrew Grayson, a self-described "welfare rat" who enlists in the North American Commonwealth (NAC) military to get out Boston - which, in the year 2108, is essentially one giant housing project. Terms of Enlistment is a well-made milSF novel that is sure to appeal to fans of the style - and would also serve as a good introduction for new readers. Four years later I have finally done so, and am happy I did. This piqued my interest, so I made note to read the series. I first became aware of Terms of Enlistment in 2015, when its sequel, Lines of Departure, was (a) included in the sad/rabid puppies Hugo slate and (b) subsequently withdrawn from consideration by Kloos because he's not a culture warrior. The series is highly regarded by fans of milSF. Since publication in 2013, Kloos has essentially written a sequel per year. It was originally self-published, then picked up by Amazon's 47North imprint. Terms of Enlistment is the debut novel from German SF writer Marko Kloos. ![]() Big D by Stephanie Brother5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() She spends most of her day typing, drinking coffee, and interacting with readers. The haunted, hallucinogenic mix of spell workings, witchcraft and disguised sex magic in "The White People" was hailed by HP Lovecraft as the second greatest horror story ever written (after Blackwood's "The Willows"), and it bears the imprint of one who believed in the "wild improbability" of what he wrote. His great stories, and the key works in this collection, date from the Decadent 1890s. TS Eliot was among those who secured him a Civil List pension against the poverty of his later years. Alas, Machen had sold the rights decades before. It wasn't until the 1920s that his books began selling in large quantities. But Wilde's 1895 imprisonment turned the moral tide against Machen's tales of supernatural horror. ![]() Aubrey Beardsley and, later, Austin Osman Spare illustrated his works. ![]() Machen had already lived in London more than a decade, as he plied a trade as a freelance writer, translating Casanova and writing an essay on tobacco, before an inheritance allowed him to write what he fancied. ![]() ![]() ![]() He shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Renaissance Italy to Imperial China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections.
